Details About Individual Workshops

The Leadership Development curriculum includes the following workshops:

Effective Communications Skills
Effective communication starts at the top, and executives and managers play a key role, not just in communicating important information but in setting a positive example of effective communication for your company’s other managers and associates.  This workshop covers the following topics:

  • Learning to listen
  • The importance of asking questions
  • Understanding the impact of body language and gestures
  • Tools and techniques for effective verbal communication
  • Tools and techniques for effective written communication
  • Making sure that your message gets through

Before the workshop, participants will read the article The Human Moment.  Participants will also complete a brief self-assessment on their communications skills.

Dealing with Conflict
Conflicts are inevitable in both our business and personal lives.  But learning to constructively work through conflicts with others can lead to stronger, healthier and more productive relationships, and serve as a source of real breakthroughs in our thinking. This workshop covers the following topics:

  • How conflicts arise, and the damage that unresolved conflicts cause
  • Framing the conflict
  • Negotiating without giving in
  • Getting past no
  • Mediating conflicts between associates

Before the workshop, participants will read portions of the book Getting to Yes.  During the interactive portion of this workshop, participants will be given several different hypothetical scenarios, and will engage other participants in role-play exercises to utilize the negotiating and conflict resolution skills and techniques discussed in the workshop.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making
Effective problem-solving and decision-making are key leadership skills that often distinguish successful leaders from those who are less successful.  This workshop provides a structure for problem-solving and decision-making that includes the following steps:

  • Define the problem
  • Collect and process information
  • Develop alternatives
  • Evaluate alternatives
  • Select the best alternative

The workshop also includes custom-designed exercises to provide participants with the opportunity to practice the problem-solving skills and techniques presented in the workshop.

Delegation and Accountability
In addition to using time more efficiently and communicating more effectively, successful delegation can significantly expand the leverage of executives and managers and increase the effectiveness of their organizations.  Equally important, delegating responsibilities to others offers important development opportunities for other managers and associates, thereby increasing organizational capabilities.

This workshop covers the following topics:

  • What is “delegation,” and why do it?
  • Recognizing and overcoming the barriers to delegation
  • Identifying and structuring tasks for effective delegation
  • The importance of accountability
  • Providing support while minimizing risks
  • Developing yourself through delegation

Before the workshop, participants will read the article Management Time:  Who’s Got the Monkey.  Participants will also complete a brief self-assessment on their delegation skills, and use information from their time logs from the prior workshop to prepare a “delegation worksheet” that will identify tasks that can be delegated to others.  Participants will review and refine these worksheets during the workshop, and then apply the skills learned through the workshop to delegate some or all of the tasks identified.

Managing Time Effectively
If you’re going to ask busy executives and managers to dedicate time to develop new leadership skills, you need to give them tools to find more time in their already overbooked schedule.  Our time management workshop focuses on the development of effective time management skills, and addresses the following topics:

  • Analyzing your use of time
  • Identifying your goals and priorities
  • Assessing your work patterns
  • Using tools to better manage your time
  • Changes you can make today to buy more time
  • Managing the time of others

Before the workshop, participants will maintain a time log for a one to two week period.  The time logs will be reviewed in the workshop, providing participants with objective data on their actual use of time, and helping them to understand how small changes in their approach to time management can make them more productive.  After the workshop, participants will maintain a new time log for an additional one to two weeks to gauge the impact of those changes.
